Did you know that bathrooms and kitchens are the most expensive rooms in a home to renovate? According to the 2014 issue of Remodeling magazine, average cost of a kitchen renovation is around $55,000, while the typical bathroom remodel is around $35,000. Of course, these are complete high end renovations, but even half those prices can be substantial investments to the average American homeowner.
Although kitchen remodeling is usually more expensive than bathroom remodeling costs, bathroom remodeling is often more practical. Homeowners do not look at their fixtures and tubs simply for aesthetics, but for convenience. Never is practicality, convenience and safety more prevalent than in the homes of the elderly or handicapped.
Obviously, when an older person loses mobility or a person is physically impaired, climbing in and out of a tub can be a challenging and dangerous task. Furthermore, when bathroom remodel designs are being done for individuals with disabilities, it is crucial to look closely at all issues that could potentially hamper accessibility. This applies not only to showers and bathtubs, but to sinks, faucets, and toilets.
When handicapped bathroom remodeling companies are designing handicap bathrooms they must take a number of issues into consideration. Doors must be wider, spaces between all bathroom fixtures must be wide enough to accommodate walkers, wheelchair, or people hobbling around on one foot. For obvious reasons, toilet seats should be higher, sink basins should be height appropriate, and even walk-in bathtubs might be a good idea.
Unless a person is handicapped, it is difficult for able-bodied persons to appreciate the planning that must go into designing handicap bathrooms. However, designing bathrooms with the right fixtures and measurements can greatly enhance the lives of people living with limited mobility.
