Julie Khuu recommends making a mood board, which is like a three-dimensional blueprint of your ideal bathroom. There are many online tools to help you do this.

Always get samples whenever possible. Things that look great in catalogs or on websites look entirely different when in your bathroom. This is especially important for new colors for walls or for tiles.

Full natural stone slab shower stalls or bathroom walls are easier to clean than tile but are more expensive. The less costly alternative is a porcelain veneer slab. There are always less costly alternatives to achieve the look you want, provided you are willing to spend the time looking for these alternatives.

When using tiles, be sure to order bullnosed tiles, which are tiles with finished edges instead of a stark white edge, making the tiles look broken in half. Bullnosed tiles give a pleasing look. Another alternative is a schluter strip, which is a metal edge to cover up the ends of unfinished tiles.
