When upgrading their outdoor living spaces, most people in the United States are focusing on their backyards. A recent survey showed that this was the case with 64% of the participating homeowners. In addition to putting in paving and new plant and flower beds, homeowners are also building or upgrading structures, such as patios, decks, and gazebos. Other homeowners are totally renovating their backyards by re-grading, terracing, or designing an entirely new landscape.
Over half of the homeowners involved in these projects are planning to spend more time outdoors. They intend to spend at least 6 hours a week relaxing, gardening, and entertaining in their revitalized areas.
Patios, Porches, and Decks: Popular Home Additions
In 2014, approximately 1/3 of the homes that people purchased came with both a patio and a porch. Outdoor living spaces are popular with multi-generational home buyers because they enjoy spending time outdoors. Patios, porches, and decks can provide a welcoming space, especially when the weather is comfortable.
While some homeowners may have elaborate seating areas complete with decorative umbrellas, others choose a few cozy chairs along with a table for drinks and snacks. Potted plants, herbs, fragrant flowers, and trees are also common accoutrements for patios, decks, and porches. Other homeowners may have a collection of garden art and other features, such as windmills, birdbaths, and free-standing water falls.
Since these outdoor areas expand a home’s living space, many homeowners spend a considerable amount of time entertaining outdoors. Grills and other outdoor kitchen additions are also popular so that family and friends can spend time together while preparing and sharing meals.
Patios and Decks: Popular Business Additions
Decks and patios are also a popular draw for cafes, restaurants, and other types of business establishments. When a simple deck or patio is added, this can potentially increase a business’ revenue by up to 30%.
The Simons Advisory Group actually found that a $200,000.00 investment in a deck or patio could increase overall sales by $500.000.00. Since this is more than double the initial investment, it makes good business sense to consider this addition. Many customers and clients will enjoy being outside in the fresh air rather than being in an enclosed area.
Decks with Wire Rail Systems
While there are different types of deck designs available, those with wire rail systems can create a more open feel. It’s also important to note these wire railing systems can be used for interior as well as exterior walkways, seating, and viewing areas.
Stainless steel is commonly used as cable railing for decks. Steel alloys are corrosion-resistant because they contain a minimum of 12% chromium. This provides a thin, invisible protective film on the railing’s surface. This makes them easy-to-maintain year-round, particularly in beach-area communities or those that experience inclement weather from time-to-time.
Wire Rail System Construction Requirements
Whether you’re planning to have a cable railing system installed on the ground-level, a roof-top patio, or another floor of a home, vacation rental, or eating establishment, there are several important construction requirements to consider. Since these railing systems require rigid frames, they are usually constructed out of stainless steel, extruded aluminum, or various types of wood.
In order to comply with building code requirements, these frames need to be rigid enough so that a 4-inch sphere is unable to pass through them. The spacing between the posts shouldn’t be over 5 feet; however, there are some manufacturers that specify 3 feet. The cable spacing is important to minimize deflection. This is why the maximum spacing between the cable wire rail system shouldn’t be larger than 3 inches.
Once your cable deck railing system is installed, you will notice that it is preferable to the traditional enclosed designs. It will be easier to care for and create an inviting space for your friends, family, or customers.
