5 Kitchen Cabinetry Trends to Consider for 2015

Bathroom vanities chicago

In any kitchen build or remodel, custom wood kitchen cabinets are the ultimate choice, combining beauty and function for a kitchen that’s equally suited to be a showpiece and a laboratory. And one of the greatest advantages of custom wood cabinets is that they can be sanded down and refinished to keep up with the times, meaning that it’s relatively easy to give your kitchen a fresh look for 2015 (and since the best custom cabinets can cost quite a bit and you won’t be replacing them anytime soon, it’s good to know you can have some fun now without dooming yourself to a dated look 10 years down the road). Here are the cabinetry trends the design experts say will be particularly in demand this year:

  1. Open Shelving

Rather than a full-wall bank of cabinets, experts are suggesting a mix of closed cabinets and open shelving. This can reduce the top-heavy look of kitchens with too many upper cabinets without reducing overall storage space. The only downside, of course, is that you’ll have to keep things tidy.

  2. The Furniture Look

This has been popular in custom bathroom vanities for a few years, but is just now gaining traction in the kitchen. Instead of solid center islands, high-end designers are installing furniture-like workspaces complete with legs and decorative detail.

  3. Textured Materials

More and more custom made cabinets are being given textured finishes rather than a simple stain. This includes super-sleek glossy enamel and rougher options, too. Just no early-90s crackle treatments, please.

  4. Wood Noir

2015 is the year to go dark, designers say. You can settle for a deep espresso stain if you’re shy, but plain matte black will be considered especially chic this year. It’s important to mix textures in other aspects of the room (countertop, backsplash, flooring and appliances) to add some metallic shine elsewhere in the design.

  5. Shaker Simple

For a more casual feel, white or off-white Shaker-style cabinets are back in fashion. This panel style features simple but high-quality woodworking, so it’s a good way to keep the design elegant without feeling formal or overdone.
