Every few months, homeowners need to inspect their houses to see if they either need roof repairs or, at worst, need a roof replacement. Though many know that that’s what they should do, too few homeowners actually know what to look for.
If you’ve recently taken a look and aren’t sure if you need a roofer or not, go back over your house and check for these possible damages.
Leaks.
Perhaps the most obvious sign that a house needs roof repairs, leaks let water penetrate a home, and could cause water damage, which in turn will cause mold, mildew, and rot. This consequentially will lead to damage the roof’s integrity, and will worsen if left unfixed. Sometimes, leaks can be glaringly obvious. Other times, though, they may have formed in a part of the house you don’t regularly see. To check for leaks, go to your attic and look for dark spots on the boards that form your roof frame’s underside. If you notice these damp streaks, you’re going to need some roof repairs.
Weather.
Rain, sleet, snow, slush, hail, old leaves, and fallen branches can all damage a roof. Though roofs are built tough to withstand the elements, precipitation and debris can collectively take their toll on a roof over time. To check your roof for weather damage, it’s best to call in the professionals, who will inspect your house and let you know whether or not you need roof repairs as a result of your area’s heavy storms.
Aging.
Though some types of roofing materials last far longer than others, the fact of the matter is that no roof is safe from the forces of time. Asphalt/composite shingles, the most common type of roofing shingles, usually have a lifespan of about 20 to 25 years. If you notice shingle granules coming off, you may need roof repairs soon, as this indicates that your roof’s life expectancy is beginning to dwindle.
If your roof has sprung leaks, been beaten by the elements, or has gotten old, chances are you’re going to need some roof repairs. If left alone, the damage may get worse, and could reach a point where you may need a new roof, so it’s imperative that you act soon, and get the roof repairs you need.
