Growing a full, healthy lawn from grass seeds is no easy task — it requires a lot of research, planning, and consistent maintenance. Having a healthy, green lawn is definitely a source of pride amongst most homeowners, but a lot of people don’t really know how to make that happen.
So, if you’re in the process of growing a lawn, here are a few tips on planting grass seed to help get you started!
- Make sure to buy the correct type of grass seed. Most people don’t realize that there are many different types of grasses, and therefore many different options of seeds to buy — but not every type of grass will work well for every region. When determining which type of seed to buy, don’t just take aesthetic quality into consideration. You want to make sure you factor in things like weather and temperature, the amount of sun that your lawn will get, the type of soil you’re dealing with, and the chemicals that are most prevalent in the soil.
- Water and fertilizer are probably the two most important things you can do yourself to help your lawn seed grow (although sunlight is incredibly important too, but it’s a little hard to control that yourself). The key is to make sure that you don’t overwater your lawn seed while it’s growing; most landscaping experts advise that you water newly-planted seeds twice a day, in the morning and evening, or even once a day if the area doesn’t receive much sunlight and the soil stays damp. As far as fertilizer goes, it’s important to find a good mixture that adds the correct chemicals to reach a healthy pH balance in the soil. After your lawn starts growing and you have to mow it, the excess grass clippings actually serve as great natural fertilizer.
- Finally, when the grass starts to grow, make sure to keep taking proper care of your lawn — a healthy lawn starts with planting lawn seed, but it only thrives and is worth your time and effort if you continue to take care of it! Don’t be afraid to trim your lawn for the first time when it starts growing — a short trim will actually encourage the grass to grow. Additionally, it’s important to aerate your lawn at least twice a year; the process of aerating allows oxygen to seep into the soil, which produces healthier grass.
