Most people are primarily concerned about the cost of their roof replacement, which is why they might opt for the more cost efficient types of roofing materials as opposed to the more expensive roofing materials types. It’s also why they’ll often go with the cheapest roofer.
This, however, is a big mistake. Though it’s a wise decision to be as economic as possible, cheapest isn’t always best. Opting for the less expensive option when you need a roofer will often yield a poor return on your investment. On the flip side, hiring the less inexpensive contractor who has a good reputation will allow you to rest easy, knowing that there’s quality craftsmanship above your head.
No matter how badly you need a roofer, you have to check these things first before you hire anyone.
How Well Trained Are the Workers?
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link the same way a roofing company is only as good as its employees, which is why when you need a roofer it’s important to ascertain what kind of training the company’s employees have had. What kind of accreditation and certification does the company have? Do they have any safety training certificates?
Call the Better Business Bureau.
It’s never a bad idea to check with the Better Business Bureau when you need a roofer. In fact, roofing was their most inquired about industry back in 2011. They’ll be able to tell you about any complaints a certain roofing company has had, and what those complaints were.
Get It in Writing.
A verbal agreement is great and all, but you really do need to get it in writing nowadays. Make sure everything is put into ink and paper — the scope of the project, the materials being used, the date the project began, the date it was completed, and an itemized list of the cost of materials and labor.
It’s exactly as they say: you get what you pay for. When you need a roofer, it’s always better to go with the more reputable contractor, even if the other guys are cheaper.
