Did you know that nearly 30% of all burglaries are through an open window or door? Seems like kind of a dumb move! You can be smarter about protecting your home by following these tips.
Make a plan – No one ever wants to imagine being a part of a home invasion. But it pays to be prepared! Just like you would if you were making your family a fire safety plan, make sure your family has a plan in place for if there’s a break-in to your home. Establish a safe room, and make sure you know where you keep the means to protect yourself. (Like a gun locker.)
Know your resources – If your house isn’t equipped with steel doors and steel windows, you should look into how little it costs to have your current residential windows and doors replaced. Steel windows and doors are nearly indestructible, and can prevent a break-in altogether. If you don’t have steel doors, you should have an alarm system. If you don’t have an alarm system, use the panic button on your car’s key fob to alert intruders of your presence and potentially scare them away.
Know your neighbors – Especially if you can’t install steel doors for your home, you should definitely know where the next safest place is in the event of an intruder. By making a plan that includes your neighbors, you’ll have backup in the event of a disaster, or at the very least, will have someone who can keep an eye out for you. (Especially if you aren’t home.)
You can never be too prepared for an unexpected event like this one. By planning all your options beforehand, you can ensure that you’ll have maximum control over your family’s safety, and the safety of your home.
