3 Ways Your Roommate Broke The AC Unit

How do i light my furnace

First, a cautionary tale about air conditioners:

Once upon a time, there lived a group of happy young bros in a house near their university. Over the summer, their air conditioner suddenly stopped working. The house grew so hot, they just sweat all over the place, and it was super gross. They could no longer invite friends or girlfriends to their abode for fun summer activities. Three separate air conditioner repair men came to fix their unit, but said there was nothing they could do. After the summer of sweat had finally ended, a helpful neighbor took pity on the young bros and decided to help.

Turns out, our young bros forgot to change their air filter. The air conditioner couldn’t be fixed, because it wasn’t broken. A clogged air filter prevented air from circulating, and they spend nearly a $1,000 on wasted electrical bills.

Maybe you know these bros. Maybe you WERE these bros. Who can say? So how do you fix a busted air conditioner during the middle of the summer?

1. Change The Filter, Brah

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning filters should be changed every 90 days to avoid costly damage and poor performance. During the middle of burning summers or freezing winters, a clogged or dirty HVAC filter can turn up your heating or electrical bills. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why is my air conditioner frozen?” A dirty filter can cause the outside console to fill up with ice.

2. Pray Your Home Air Conditioning Compressor Is Working

At the frosty heart of your cooling unit lies the home air conditioning compressor, and it’s the most important component of the entire appliance. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most expensive heating and cooling parts. The compressor circulates the refrigerant, so a busted or faulty compressor will turn your AC unit into a really expensive fan.

If you can rule out electrical problems like a blown fuse, or if your fan is working but no cold air comes out, then you should contact an air conditioner repair company to assess the damage to your home air conditioning compressor, before it’s too late.

3. Do You Have Children In The House? Do You Have Roommates Who Basically Are Children?

Many a frustrated roommate has had to organize A/C repair after an impatient roommate ruined the AC system. If your AC keeps breaking down, then make sure everyone in your household actually knows how to use the temperature controls.

Sometimes children or bad roommates will get too hot, and in their eagerness, they will change the temperature to a ridiculous 56 degrees. Essentially, they are telling your home air conditioning compressor to make your home as cold as your refrigerator, and your poor, heartbroken AC unit will likely kill itself trying to make it so.

Gently remind your roommates that they shouldn’t adjust the temperature by more than two degrees at any time. You know, like a grownup.

The moral of our story? There are three common problems with cooling units. Two are easily solved, the other involves repairing or replacing your home air conditioning compressor.

Good luck and stay chill, bros everywhere.
